In 2014, Yaroslavl State Medical University celebrates 70-th year anniversary. Through the years the university has become a multi-profi le higheducational institution that provides education, professional re-education, and improving of qualifi cation of doctors and pharmacists for a large region of Russia. Also the university now is the important scientifi c center where signifi cant fundamental and clinical studies are conducting, and where modern information technologies and innovations are actively developing. August 15, 1944 is the birthday of the university, because at this date it has been signed the decree of Council of People’s Commissars of USSR about the opening of Yaroslavl State Medical Institute. Continuous development and high authority of the university are provided by the labor of multiple generations and dynasties of professors, instructors and offi cials that are based on the solid background of carefully preserved traditions. Our alumni are working successfully in the different regions of Russia and abroad. Among these former graduates of our alma mater are famous scientists, researchers, leaders and heads of healthcare system, respected professionals of various branches of medicine and outstanding public fi gures. The dynamical development of Russia in the new millennium under the circumstances of our entrance into international educational environment forms new qualitative tasks in front of medical high school education system. Intellectual and material potential of the university, obtained knowledge and experience are the guarantees of aforementioned tasks solution and our stable forward movement.

Now there are 5 student faculties that are successfully functioning at the university, these faculties are involved in education of specialists of 7 directions of high education, of 2 directions of middle-range education, and Institute of Post-Diploma Education which consists of two faculties. On the 57 departments of the university there are working 530 instructors, among them 108 doctors of sciences, 375 candidates of sciences, 1 Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences, 4 Honorary Scientists, 28 Honorary Medical Doctors, 7 Honorary Workers of High School, and 1 Honorary Worker of Culture of Russian Federation, besides that among the staff there are approximately 30 members of different public academies. The university has the offi cial state type license for educational activity and certifi cate about state accreditation from Federal Service for Supervision in the Area of Education and Science of Russian Federation. As a result of continuous monitoring of highest educational organizations provided by Ministry of Education and Science of Russian Federation, the university is recognized as an effectively functioning highest educational organization. In 8 educational buildings that belong to the university, there are located modern educational auditoriums and laboratories, 13 computer classes, fundamental library with more than 500 thousands books, and administrative divisions. The work of clinical departments is going on in main city and regional clinics and medical-prophylactic organizations on the basis of signed agreements about cooperation. For pharmacist education the university has the modern education-production pharmacy and the garden of drug and medical plants entitled «Skobykino». The social basis of the university now includes 5 hostels, refectories for university offi cials and students, sport and physical training facilities. Now there are approximately 4000 persons getting their education in the university: students, interns, residents, and post-graduate students. For the entire period of 1944-2014, the university educated and prepared 30665 medical doctors and pharmacists for Russia and for the countries of Asia, Africa, and America. More than 48 thousands of medical doctors and instructors have passed their education and professional re-education, retraining and qualifi cation improvement in the university in the aforementioned period of time.

Educational, pedagogical and methodological works in the university are designed to satisfy increasing public needs in highly-qualifi ed and spiritually-enriched medical specialists. The system concept of continuous non-stop medical education includes preeducational, student, and post-diploma stages of education and re-education of medical and pharmacy personnel. The education in the university is performing in six directions of specialist education (general medicine, pediatric medicine, pharmacy, stomatology, medical biochemistry, and clinical psychology); in one direction of bachelor education (social work); and in two directions of middle-range professional education (laboratory diagnostics and pharmacy). The educational programs are strictly adhering to the requirements of professional and Federal state educational standards. In the university we successfully use block-module schedule of classes, interactive forms of education, distant educational technologies and we are actively developing electronic-library resources. For practical skill training, it has been opened the center of mastering of practical skills. Educational activity of the university is confi rmed by international standard certifi cate of ISO 9001:2011 issued by auditor-company Quality Austria.

ERMOLAEV VLADIMIR GEORGIEVICH (1899–1972)

Director in 1944-1949

He graduated the Medical Faculty of University of Kazan (1925). In 1944–1949, he was the director of Yaroslavl State Medical Institute and the head of department of otorhinolaryngology. In 1949-1972, he was the head of department of otorhinolaryngology in Leningrad Institute for Improvement of Medical Doctor Qualifi cation. He was the holder of doctor of medical sciences degree, professor title, and Honorary Scientist of Russian Soviet Federation Republic.

KERBIKOV OLEG VASILIEVICH (1907–1965)

Director in 1949-1952

He graduated the Medical Faculty of First Moscow Medical University (1929). In 1945–1952 he headed the department of psychiatry of Yaroslavl State Medical Institute; in 1949–1952 he was the director of aforementioned institute. Later in 1952–1965, he became the head of department of psychiatry of the Second Moscow State Medical Institute named by N.I. Pirogov’s, after that he became the rector of this institute in 1956–1958. He was the holder of doctor of medical sciences degree, professor title, Academician of Academy of Medical Sciences of USSR (1963); later he obtained the position of principal secretaryacademician and of this academy (1963–1965).

TELKOV DMITRIY PAVLOVICH (1905–1955)

Director in 1952-1955

He graduated Military-Medical Academy named by S.M. Kirov (1934) and participated in the World War Two (1941–1945). In 1946–1955, he headed the department of military education of Yaroslavl State Medical Institute. In 1952–1955, he was the director of the institute. He was the Colonel of medical service, candidate of medical sciences, associated professor.

YARYGIN NIKITA EREMEEVICH (1917–2004)

Rector in 1955-1968

He graduated Tashkent medical institute (1944). He worked in Yaroslavl State Medical Institute as the vice-head on scientifi c-educational work (1952–1955), after that he became the rector (1955–1968). He was also the head of department of pathological anatomy (1952– 1989). He was the holder of doctor of medical sciences degree, professor title, and Honorary Scientist of Russian Soviet Federation Republic.

STOVICHEK GEORG VIKTOROVICH (1924–2006)

Rector in 1968-1977

He was the participant of World War Two (1942–1945). He graduated Yaroslavl State Medical Institute (1951). After graduation (1951) and until 2006, he worked in Yaroslavl State Medical Institute (later Academy, now University) as the head of department of human anatomy (1966– 1980), as vice-rector for educational work (1961–1968) and as rector (1968–1977). He was the holder of doctor of medical sciences degree, professor title, and Honorary Scientist of Russian Soviet Federation Republic.

NOVIKOV YURI VASILIEVICH (date of birth 1937)

Rector in 1977-2007

He graduated Yaroslavl State Medical Institute (1960). After graduation (1960) and until now, he is working in Yaroslavl State Medical Institute (later Academy, now University) as vice-rector of for education work (1968–1977), as the head of department of topographic anatomy and operative surgery (from 1974), and as rector (1977–2007). From 2007, he occupied the position of the president of the university. He is the holder of doctor of medical sciences degree, professor title, and Honorary Scientist of Russian Federation. He was Academician of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (from 2004) now he is Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences. He is Honorary Citizen of the city of Yaroslavl (1999).

PAVLOV ALEXEI VLADIMIROVICH (date of birth 1952)

Rector from 2007

He graduated with excellence diploma Yaroslavl Medical Institute (1975), later he successfully fi nished his education as post-graduate student at Department of Histology (1978). From 1978 he is working in Yaroslavl State Medical Academy (now University): as assistant professor, as associated professor (1987–1992), as full professor (from 1992), as the head of Department of Histology, Cytology, and Embryology (from 1993 until now). At period of years 2000-2007, he was the Vice-Rector on Scientifi c Work. At March 2007, he has been elected as rector, from year 2012 he was re-elected as rector once again for the new fi ve-year term. He is the holder of doctor of medical sciences degree, professor title, Honorary Worker of High Education School, Distinguished Worker of High Professional Education System of Russian Federation.
